Neon Outlook: Las Vegas’ live music in December

November 25th, 2008
White Arrows play Revolution Lounge on Dec. 7

White Arrows play Revolution Lounge on Dec. 7

It’s a bittersweet outlook for December’s live music. On one hand, there’s some killer stuff (Nine Inch Nails, anyone? Bloc Party? Wu Tang?!) coming to Las Vegas, and on the other hand, a number of shows scheduled for Jillian’s are homeless, as the venue has officially closed. Some shows have been moved to the House of Blues, others to The Box Office (1129 Casino Center Blvd.), but some are just … up in the air. But the all-ages music scene in Vegas is not dead yet, as the Alley Theater is slated to return soon to the valley. Or, so says its MySpace page. Keep your eyes posted to this space in the future for more on that. Until then, here are some shows that have not been canceled for December (yet…):

Tuesday, December 2
Wasted Space: Zerofingers, The Vermin and Guilty by Association at 10 p.m.

Wednesday, December 3

Gallery: Foo Fighters rock a sold-out Joint at Vegas Hard Rock

September 26th, 2008

Photo by Erik Kabik | www.erikkabikphoto.com

For those of you who didn’t catch Dave Grohl and his fighters of Foo at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel last night — and we’re going to guess that’s most of you, given the show has been sold out for months — take heart: Our favorite shutterbug, Erik Kabik, was on the scene, capturing all of the alternative rock band’s saliva-spewing fury on camera.

The Foo Fighters return to the Joint tonight to play to another sold-out crowd. We checked on Craigslist, and there are at least a dozen listings for tickets, so get thee to an ATM and pull out at least two Benjamins if you want to try and get in to this one, kids.

Neon Outlook: Atmosphere, Filter and ‘Bubba Ho-Tep’

September 24th, 2008

Bruce Campbell as Elvis Presley
Bruce Campbell plays an aged Elvis Presley in Bubba Ho-Tep.

Get your weekend started on a funky note with Atmosphere, Blueprint and Abstract Rude at House of Blues Las Vegas inside the Mandalay Bay on Friday, Sept. 26 at 5 p.m.

Sunday night, Sept. 28, check out folk-rock quintet Modern Subject and Brit-pop-infused Los Angeles band The Idyllist at The Beatles Revolution Lounge inside the Mirage at 10 p.m.

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, Filter resurfaces at Wasted Space inside the Hard Rock Hotel. The show is at 10 p.m. and cover is $20.

And for you bizarre indie film buffs, the free “CineVegas From the Vault” screening series continues at the Clark County Library (1401 E. Flamingo Road) with a showing of Bubba Ho-Tep on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. The movie stars Bruce Campbell and Ossie Davis as Elvis Presley and John F. Kennedy living their advanced years in a run-down Texas nursing home. Good times.

The Outlook: Bands coming to Las Vegas in September

bob dylan
Bob Dylan, or Adam Sandler in 20 years? You decide!

Hmm, let’s see: One classic folk legend, a few ‘90s holdovers, some groundbreaking hip-hop artists and two nights of overpriced Foo Fighters shows that will probably be worth it anyway – yep, this must be the live music coming to a few of the better Las Vegas casino venues next month:

Monday, Sept. 1
The Joint (Hard Rock Hotel): Bob Dylan at 8 p.m., $65 and up.

Thursday, Sept. 4
House of Blues (Mandalay Bay): Motorhead, Misfits, Airbourne, Valient Thorr and Year Long Disaster at 7 p.m., $32-40.

Hard Rock to My Morning Jacket: ‘Oops, sorry, bye’

August 15th, 2008

My morning jacket
If these are their morning jackets, we’re afraid to see their evening jackets.

Bad news, Las Vegas musical intelligista: Indie rock tastemaker My Morning Jacket won’t be coming to the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel on Sept. 24 as planned. Their show has been canceled due to what Hard Rock reps are calling “a casino scheduling conflict.” And even better, because the band is booked out through the rest of its tour, there will be no rescheduled Vegas date. If you did buy tickets, go to the point of purchase to cry in your scarf-wearing cupsfor a full refund.

Sex Pistols at the Hard Rock’s Joint: ‘No Fun’ indeed

June 9th, 2008

Nice pajamas. (Photo by Hew Burney)

Sex Pistols fans had two choices Saturday night to see the legendary punk rock band perform the snarling, iconic songs that defined its original, 18-month career: Hold in their hands tickets to the band’s sold-out tour kick-off at the Joint inside the Hard Rock Hotel Las Vegas, or construct a time machine and go back in time to 1977 England.

The time machine option would have been the smarter of the two.

The Sex Pistols – who are clearly just banking their retirement at this point – reinforced the necessity of their original break-up 30 years ago in a performance Saturday night that was more pathetic than anything else. Not that the legions of fans who packed the Hard Rock’s venue – mostly late-model Boomers way past their prime (oh, like the band on-stage?) – would agree. They were too blinded with pure fanaticism, reliving their foregone youths to notice that John Lydon and crew were mere caricatures of themselves, punctuating the reason why our fondest idols died (or broke up) young: Morrison, Dean, Curtis, etc. (more…)
