We’d like to thank everyone — fans, friends, contributors, retailers, dealers, etc. — for your support in 2011. We made some fun comics, helped support some worthy causes, tried some new things, went to some new places, and learned a lot along the way. 2012 is looming just around the corner (don’t think we can’t see you, 2012!), and while things have been quiet around here the last month or so, it’s mainly because we’re working on new projects to delight you in the coming year.

We hope you and yours have a happy and safe holiday season, filled with visions of comic panels dancing in your heads, and we hope you’ll stick around in the new year to see what’s coming up from Pop! Goes the Icon. Cheers!

PGTI returns to Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival

This Saturday, Nov. 5, Pop! Goes the Icon will be just one of the dozens of vendors in attendance at the fourth annual Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival, being held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Clark County Library in Las Vegas.

Once again, we’ll be celebrating the release of a commemorative comic anthology designed to both benefit the festival and highlight local talent: Tales from Fremont Street, a murder mystery told by 10 Vegas-based writers and artists. Most of those creators — including Warren Wucinich, Deryl Skelton and Victor Moya — will be signing, sketching and chatting at the PGTI booth throughout the day.

As well, we’ll have our full selection of titles, including Omega Comics Presents, The Utopian, and last year’s benefit anthology, Tales from the Boneyard, from which sales have raised more than $1000 for the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation.

‘Tales from Fremont Street’ to benefit Library District Foundation

Earlier this year, we were honored to hand over a check for $1052.30 to the Las Vegas-Clark County Library District Foundation in support of the Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival. That donation was made possible because of people like you, who purchased (and enjoyed, we hope) copies of Tales from the Boneyard, the all-original anthology comic we published to commemorate the 2010 Vegas Valley Comic Book Festival.

So we’re proud to announce that pre-orders are now open for our next anthology benefiting the Library District Foundation: Tales from Fremont Street. Omega Comics contributors coming to a con near you

This summer, you can meet the talents behind Omega Comics Presents, the anthology series that Ain’t It Cool News calls “a great chunk of indie fun that has enough mainstream sensibilities to please both mainstream and indie readers.”

Russell Lissau, writer of multiple OCP stories, including the acclaimed “L’ange de Bastogne” from issue four (“a thrilling WWII vampire story”), will be at Quad Cities Anime-Zing! in Davenport, Iowa from June 17 to 19. Lissau will also be at Wizard World Chicago Comic-Con, which hits the Windy City Aug. 11 to 14.

Meanwhile, Canadian writer Dino Caruso, who has contributed a number of OCP comedic shorts, will hold court at the Calgary Comics & Entertainment Expo on June 17, 18 and 19 and at FanExpo Canada in Toronto from Aug. 25 to 28. His most recent contribution, “The Night Shift,” has been hailed as “a derivative and clever play on words and super hero stereotypes.”

Vampires, space miners and superheroes invade latest issue of Omega Comics Presents

It is December, 1944, and the Ardennes is deluged with snow that won’t stop falling, even as ill-prepared, exhausted American troops barely hold back the advance of the brutal German military machine. That’s how the fourth issue of our black-and-white anthology series Omega Comics Presents opens, but the direness of the setting doesn’t even hint at the direction Russell Lissau and mpMann take readers over the next 11 pages.

Led by “L’ange de Bastogne,” Lissau and Mann’s gripping cover feature, the latest collection of all-new stories by some of today’s best, unsung indie comic book talents also includes gems such as “Cold,” Steve Wallace’s alternately humorous and dramatic exploration of two space miners caught in a possibly hopeless situation, and “The Night Shift,” a short by Dino Caruso and Sam Agro with a twist ending that will leave readers smiling. Rounding out the issue’s offerings is the final chapter of “Omega,” the action-espionage serial by Editor Pj Perez, in which the drama of the siege at Hoover Dam comes to an explosive conclusion.

Critics have been digging what they’ve seen in Omega Comics Presents so far. Comics Should Be Good enjoyed Alex DeGruchy’s “The Hero’s Journey” from issue three, calling it “a cool little superhero story that we probably wouldn’t see from one of the Big Two.” Ain’t It Cool News loves the series, declaring “Omega Comics Presents continues to be a powerful anthology featuring some surprisingly talented folks you’ve more than likely never heard of … yet.” And Bookgasm simply demanded “more, please!” Who are we to argue?

‘The Utopian’ now available in single print volume

In writer/artist Pj Perez’s serial webcomic The Utopian, readers followed for 18 months as disillusioned high school senior James Douglas experienced the trials and tribulations that came with his attempt to change the world around him in the anonymous identity of the “Utopian.” Now, the entire roller coaster ride that is the Utopian saga is available in one glossy, mass-market trade paperback.

The Utopian trade paperback collects all 109 pages of “America’s Most Emo Comic Strip” within a beautiful, digitally painted cover by Hernan Valencia, who illustrated many of the covers for the quarterly single issues of The Utopian. As a bonus, Perez has included eight pages of full annotations, detailing the secret history and process behind every page of the graphic novel.

“Although billed as ‘America’s Most Emo Comic Strip,’ The Utopian doesn’t read anything like a My Chemical Romance lyrics sheet,” wrote Jarret Keene in the Las Vegas CityLife‘s CityBlog. “It owes more to teen adventure series like The Bloodhound Gang, Buffy the Vampire Slayer or early issues of Amazing Spider-Man.”
